At this critical moment in the history of our nation, I hope that I can count on my elected representatives in Washington to break the mold and to enact the first meaningful health care reform in years.
New Hampshire's families are hurting and they are worried. How many posters and flyers have we seen in the last ten years from families having fundraisers to pay for the health care cost of just one child? The answer is: too many.
No matter how we want to reach out to these families, we as individuals cannot stand up to the enormous health insurance industry. We cannot stand up against the powerful lobbyists, against the huge money spent in Washington to protect this bloated business interest; we as individuals simply have no chance against their resources of money and influence.
It is up to our government - of the people, by the people and for the people - to protect families from exploitation by the billion dollar insurance industry.
This is the time for even Republicans to stand behind the citizens who voted for them; and it is time for them to turn their backs on the health insurers and side with the people once and for all.
We hear the scare tactics, hear the horror stories being circulated by the opponents of reform. How many NH residents have been panicked by this language of fear? How many have not taken a moment to stop and think about how different their lives would be if quality health care were no longer something to worry about, but something to depend on?
Every family in our state deserves to have good quality health care that is affordable and available.
Every family in our state deserves to be able to take a sick child to the doctor and not worry whether there is enough money left over for the mortgage, or rent, or food… or if there is enough to care for other members in the family.
The only people tomorrow who will determine whether our citizens deserve safe and available health care are our Congressional representatives. I hope that our elected representatives will show that they care about families in our state -- that they care about our nation's health and security by providing this single profoundly important benefit to families in New Hampshire and across the Unites States.
